Kiwanis club of Tri-Cities: Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, Michigan
Chartered in 2004
TCK Salmon Tournament
2020 Events: Thursday, May 21 and Thursday, July 23
Thank you to all our Sponsors and Donors (see below), Patient VIPs and hospital contacts, Kiwanians and volunteers — We had a great event despite unusual circumstances, had fun, and raised money for pediatric healthcare!
All net proceeds of our two annual Salmon Tournaments support pediatric care at North Ottawa Community Health System (NOCHS), and Child Life programs at children’s hospitals in Michigan including Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital.
Tournament sponsors are assigned to professional charter boats for a morning of exciting salmon fishing on Lake Michigan. Each boat holds up to six participants, and sponsors can invite anyone they wish — family, friends, employees or customers. Sponsors can also support fishing opportunities for young patients.
Sponsor to support children’s hospitals — and have a fun day of salmon fishing on Lake Michigan!
Sponsorships must be received and all boat participants registered no later than two weeks in advance of event. Boats are arranged based on paid sponsor request whenever possible. [See the 2020 Sponsorship Form]
Boats Depart at 6:00 a.m. from Chinook Pier, Grand Haven. Coffee and donuts are available before departure. All participants must register before departing, and pick up their fish tags. Boats Return at 12:00 p.m. to Chinook Pier and tagged fish are weighed and processed. Lunch is provided, and a short program precedes the awarding of prizes. A Grand Prize is awarded for the largest fish in Sponsor and Patient VIP categories. Additional prizes are awarded by lottery using the fish tags.
Inclement weather: Our charter captains make the call on Tournament morning if the weather is not suitable for their boat. Unless travel is unsafe, sponsors and participants should come to Chinook Pier. In the event the fishing is canceled, each set of participants may set up a separate day and time to fish with their assigned charter.
Grand Admiral Earl O’Brien
This year we honor Earl “The Pearl” O’Brien, our founder and Grand Admiral, who spent his life creating opportunities for kids to enjoy sports and life, even if disadvantaged, disabled, or dealing with catastrophic disease. Earl passed away on November 4, 2019. [Obituary, and Grand Haven Tribune Article] See the video above for photos of our 15-year tournament history and the special impact that Earl had on our community and the world. He truly lived the Kiwanis mission of “improving the world one child and one community at a time.” [Donate in honor of Earl]
Tom and Jan Hamilton
We have also recently lost both of our greatest fans, Tom and Jan Hamilton. Tom was a retired fish biologist with a passion for conservation and youth involvement in fishing. He passed away on November 29, 2019. [Read Tom’s Obituary] Jan was better known as “The Cookie Lady” — she donated her delicious cookies to many efforts, including ours. She had a huge heart for kids, and loved to see our Patient VIPs smiling and enjoying our events. She passed away on June 18, 2020. [Read Jan’s Obituary] They will both be so very missed. [Donate in honor of Tom and Jan]
